P.C. Hooftstraat
This street may be named after a famous Dutch poet but it
currently hosts all the big retail names the world has to offer. If
you’re looking for luxury, you’ve come to the right place. If you
want a bit of poetry as well try rhyming Louis Vuitton with Dolce & Gabbana, Hugo Boss with Filippa K, or Mulberry with Dutch
childrens label Oilily. They’re all here.
Or sit in one of the cafes, sip a latte, watch the expensive cars drive
by and try to spot a Dutch celebrity. We call it the ‘Spot a Dutch
Celebrity’ game.
Haarlemmerstraat
Don’t skip this busy street, close to the Central Station, because it
hosts a variety of shops and cafes.
Papabubble has the designer candy, there’s scuba gear at Aqua
Diving and some delicious wines at Grape District. Eat, scuba and
drink – they’ve certainly got it all covered, here.
Utrechtsestraat
Another picturesque shopping street, another lethal tram running
right through it. You’ll find a huge American Apparel here but also
possibly the best music shop in town, Concierto, which is a must for
music lovers. Golden Temple, one of the oldest vegetarian
restaurants in town, will satisfy the meat-dodgers and don’t forget
to try the cake at Koffie Salon.
Leidsestraat
As long as you remember to watch out for the tram that glides
through this busy shopping street, you should be able to drop some
serious money on this street and still live to pay your credit card
bill.
There’s more mainstream shopping, here, with shoes, fashion,
books and sunglasses on offer. A perfect spot for Sunday shopping
as all the shops will be open until 18:00, guaranteed.
The 9 Streets
Looking for something eclectic and unique? How about strolling
around nine small streets that all follow the main canals of
Amsterdams city center? With unique insight, the locals call it the nine streets.
There’s a shop selling just toothbrushes (De Witte Tandenwinkel), exclusively Finnish fashion and design (Kauppa), Dutch pancakes in a modern but cute setting (Pancakes!), and amazing vintage stuff (Laura Dols). There are good places for lunch by the canal (try Buffet van Odette) and to kick start your evening with a cocktail (Loop).
