What do locals do in Amsterdam on a sunny day? They say ‘hey, it’s stopped raining’ and they take the ferry to the NDSM to chill out at hip, industrial, creative, beachy places.
The ferry is free, and goes from central station. After 15 minutes of wind in your hair, passing by the Eye museum and other interesting buildings you arrive at NDSM - Nederlandse Dock en Scheepsbouw Maatschappij. Yes, that’s why they shortened it to NDSM. It used to be a huge shipyard. Hence the industrial look, and lots of space. Nowadays, you can find many cool places to chill out. Like Pllek, IJkantine, Bistro Noord en Noorderlicht.
Nicka loves to sit with her bare feet in the sand at Pllek, ‘my boyfriend lives close by the NDSM,’ she admits. ‘On my way there, or on the way back to the city I love to take a pit stop there. It’s hip, Berlin-style, creative and I love the water around me. If you really want to do what the locals do, come by the NDSM on the last weekend of the month. Then, there is a huge flea market in and outside the IJhallen where you can find anything vintage you like.’
Where? Amsterdam Noord – just take the ferry to ‘NDSM’
When? Sunny days are the best.
