Everything you need to know about King's Day in Amsterdam

One of the biggest, busiest and most orange street festivals of the year is around the corner, and we can't wait. On the 27th of April, we have a national holiday and the whole country will be celebrating the birthday of our King. Expect the streets and canals flooded with dancing and drinking people, expect street stalls and markets on every street corner, and definitely expect that everything and everyone will be orange. Stroll through the city center neighborhoods Nieuwmarkt and Jordaan, go to Westerpark for a flea market, or buy a ticket for a big music festival. There is plenty to do on this cheery day.

When you are not sure what is happening, King's Day in Amsterdam can be quite overwhelming. That is why we have some tips for you:

  • There is no such thing as too much orange. Orange is our national color, and we like to show this on King's Day. Decorating yourself with all orange things you can find has become a tradition, so make sure that you fit in and at least wear something orange. We can imagine that you don't have your closet filled with orange clothes, so don't worry, weeks before the day shops are overflowing with orange stuff. So you'll definitely be able to find something then.
  • The weather in the Netherlands is definitely not our best feature. Especially around April, it can be annoyingly unpredictable. Year after year we hope for the tiniest glimpse of sunshine, however, the rain never stopped us from partying. Tip: keep an eye on the forecasts and be prepared for any kind of weather.
  • King's Day is not only celebrated by us Dutchies, but it's also a famous happening under the foreign party animals. A lot of holidaymakers plan their trip to Amsterdam around the 27th of April to experience this joyful day. Unfortunately, this means that Amsterdam will be very busy, so don’t be shocked when all the hotels are full when you book a week in advance. Try to book your stay as soon as possible.
  • Put on your walking shoes! Cars, taxi's, and public transport will be banned from the city center so the most convenient way to go from A to B will be on foot. Another option is the typical Dutch style, namely to rent a bike, and roll yourself from one party to the other.
  • The city will be filled with street stalls to buy food and drinks, and whether you want it or not, you will definitely walk past one or two street markets. Speaking from experience, those stalls don't have a lot of small cash to change. So if you want to get through the day, you should make sure you have your pockets filled with small money.
  • Unfortunately, on days like this, there are always pickpockets on the loose. So keep your belongings close and don't give them the chance to ruin your Kingsday.
  • Oh, last but not least, don't expect to ignore the celebrations and plan your all-day museum trip. There is no escaping from King's Day, since most of the museums, restaurants, stores, etc will be closed the whole day. If you still want to skip it all, I recommend stay inside your hotel or go see some windmills outside of the city.
P.S. If you really can't wait for the 27th, at Bar Kantoor we have snacks, drinks, and funky tunes for you the night before.
