It’s all too tempting to lose track of your home exercise routines when you travel. A new and exciting city just bursting with ‘must-see’ attractions. The food. Partying. The local drinks that you ‘just have to try’. Lack of sleep. The food. With all this, it’s easy to forget about looking after yourself.
We’ve put together a few short stretches to help you keep on top of your health so you can enjoy your stay here even more.
Remember: consult a medical practitioner before beginning any new type of exercise and exercise cautiously if you have not exercised recently, have any pre-existing medical condition, are pregnant or unwell. If you feel faint or dizzy during any exercise, stop immediately and call reception to get a doctor.
These stretches can be used before walking, cycling or running or just on their own.
Try for 3 repetitions of each stretch.
For floor exercises, use a towel or two on the floor for comfort.
Superman Pushing Bricks
Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart, toes pointing forward and lean forward with the palms of your hands against a wall.
Take your right foot back, keeping your right leg straight and bend your left knee.
You should feel a slight strain (not too much) in your right calf muscle. Hold the stretch and then start again, stretching your left calf, this time.
If you find you have demolished the wall, please contact reception for assistance.
Extreme Disco Lunge
Stand upright, with both feet facing forward and wide apart and hands on hips.
Breathe out and take your bodyweight across to your right side. Try not to lean forward or to bend your back.
Hold and repeat on the left side.
You look fabulous.
Extend both hands straight above your head, wrists crossed, palms together.
Try not to get tangled up with a ceiling light!
Breathe in while slowly pushing your hands upward, then backward, keeping your back straight and feet flat on the ground.
Breathe out and relax before you repeat it.
Outside Your Room
Vondelpark (circuit 3,3 km)
The lush green surroundings of Vondelpark are just a few hundred metres from the front doors of our hotels and provide a great backdrop to all sorts of exercise. Vondelpark is the largest park in Amsterdam, and certainly the best known park in the Netherlands, welcoming approximately 10 million visitors each year (though not all on the same day).
On the southern side of the park you can rent inline skates at the Vondeltuin. If all this skating, walking or cycling makes you thirsty, the park has four places where you can have a drink or something to eat.
