With more than 50 museums Amsterdam packs a big cultural punch... The Dutch capital bristles with long established institutions famous around the globe and lesser known hidden treasures in every form of artistic expression.
In recent years, photography and multimedia exhibitions have been booming.
Anne Frank House
During World War Two Anne Frank and her family lived
for more than two years by hiding in the annex of the building
at Prinsengracht 263. Since 1960 the house is a museum
where Anne’s original diary and other notebooks are
on display.
Opening hours: From Mar. 15 till Sep. 14 from 9:00-21:00.
From Sep. 15 till Mar. 14 from 9:00-19:00.

Van Gogh Museum
The museum contains the largest collection of paintings by
Vincent van Gogh in the world. The museum also holds an
extensive amount of exhibitions by other artists on various
subjects from 19th century art history.

Rijksmuseum
The Rijksmuseum (national museum) is the largest museum
of the Netherlands and was built in 1876 according to a
design by architect P.J.H. Cuypers. It features a famous
collection of works by Rembrandt (the Night Watch), Vermeer
and Frans Hals as well as delftware, sculpture, Asian art and
prints. Note: the main building of the museum is being renovated
until 2013.

Amsterdam Museum
The Amsterdam Museum is housed in magnificent buildings
built in the 15th century and extended in the 17th. The great
collection of works of art, objects and archaeological finds brings
to life the fortunes of Amsterdammers of days gone by and today,
and give you the perfect introduction to Amsterdam and its past.

The Hermitage
The Hermitage museum on the Amstel river is the Dutch branch
of the State Hermitage in St. Petersburg. Hermitage Amsterdam
organizes exhibitions on one selected theme, giving usually two
showings each year. All the exhibited objects are transported
from the State Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg. After the
exhibitions all the objects travel back to Russia.
Opening hours: Daily 10:00-17:00. Wed till 20:00.
FOAM
FOAM exhibits all genres of photography: fine art, documentary,
applied, historical and contemporary. The museum
rotates its shows every two to four months to give the
audience a chance to view work by both world famous
and up-and-coming talent. The museum organizes special
tours, lectures and discussions, films and other events on a
regular basis.
Opening hours: Daily 10:00-18.00. Thu and Fri till 21:00.
Stedelijk Museum
The Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, opened in 1895 and is the
largest museum for modern and contemporary art and
design in the Netherlands. The original building was designed
by architect Adriaan Willem Weissman; in 2004, the building
was closed for a much-needed renovation. While that work
continues, the museum is hosting a unique and compelling
program of exhibitions, education programs and special events
called The Temporary Stedelijk.
