You wouldn't think there is life beyond Amsterdam, would you? Well there is, so let us introduce you to some traditional Dutch villages. Just hop on the bus at Amsterdam Central Station towards Edam (30 mins). Yes, the cheese city! Every Wednesday from the 5th of July until the 23rd of August (10.30 until 12.30) there's a cheese market where - under the watchful eye of the market superintendent - you can see the proces of a cheese inspection. If you won't be there during cheese market season, no worries, wondering around the beautiful old canals is also worth it.
Edam is connected to Volendam by a long dike along the Markermeer. If you're wearing comfy shoes take a stroll over there. The tourist police makes sure nobody leaves Volendam before taking a picture in traditional clothing and letting some fresh herring slide down your throat. Continue by boat to the peninsula Marken (30 mins), an authentic Dutch village with traditional wooden houses. From Marken you can take the bus back to Amsterdam. It doens't get more Dutch than this.
Our host would love to tell you how to get there.
